Art is
a form of self-expression, a creation that is unique and personal to the artist
and it’s viewers. Art to me has always been defined as a type of work that has
the ability to shock someone, change a mood, or develop empathy. One particular
aspect that does so, is the art of storytelling. Ever since I was in middle
school, I was always intrigued by standup comedy. I would spend numerous bus
rides home listening to different comedians on Pandora telling their hilarious
stories, whether they were wild or things that occurred in their everyday life.
This love for comedy grew as I got older, along with my newfound love for
independent cinema. When I discovered the realm of lowkey dark films, I soon became
hooked. Films like Mysterious Skin, Happiness,
and Mulholland Drive really made me
question the world and human nature as one. Although these films did not make
me laugh out loud like the stand up, they still allowed me to empathize with the
characters and experiences, as did the comedians when I listened to their
shows. My goal in life is to create a story through moving image and sound that
combines both these aspects of dark storytelling and humor.
My biggest
influences are director Todd Solondz, comedian Patton Oswalt, and writer Lena
Dunham. I admire them very much for their
innate ability to tell stories that pull their listeners/viewers into a whole
new world. They allow us to get an insight into their lives and experiences
from their perspective and their characters. To me, that is art, being able to
put yourself in someone else’s shoes.
